Becca's Fab Five- January Edition

It's no surprise that I am a health junkie.... food, movement, stress reduction, sleep, hormones, brain chemistry, gut health.... you name it. I LOVE the Human Body with all of it's mysteries and intricacies. New products and science are always coming down the pipe and it's hard to know what to read, where to spend you dollars, and when to focus your energy. I thought it would be helpful to show you just FIVE things I'm loving each month. Maybe a recipe, or a book, or an exercise or stretch..... Maybe a product, or a podcast, or a restaurant or venue. I'm giving you ONE THING in each of the areas of our Four Cornerstones or Health, plus a bonus. I hope you'll try them in your life and find a benefit for you!

Nourishment:

We all try to eat better. It's a constant battle, and it can be hard to know where to focus your energy! When I am considering how to feed myself and my boys, I always consider blood sugar regulation first and foremost. That means that we want a nice mix of protein and fat to offset our carbohydrates. To be sure, there's NOTHING WRONG WITH CARBOHYDRATES. But when you consume them without the buffer of fat and/or protein (yes, even if it is fruit), the resulting glucose can send blood sugar on a rollercoaster ride.

Enter Cheese Whisps. They are crunchy, yummy, and satisfying. As a bonus, the ingredient list is ONE THING- Cheese. These aren't perfect by any means, but they travel well, store well in the car and my family loves them. And that's good enough for me!

All the flavors are good, but I have a special fondness for Cheddar. It's reminiscent of Goldfish Crackers :-)

Movement:

Movement is greater than exercise. Sneaking in little bits of movement throughout the day, allows your body to experience a variety of inputs. It doesn't have to be much and it doesn't have to be elaborate. Over the last month, I have been enjoying using a 2 x 4 to practice balance in different positions- lunges, kick-thrus, squatting, lateral walking, bear crawls. It's inexpensive and it doesn't take up much space. Try it yourself for little 5-10 minute breaks throughout the day!

Enjoyment:

The older I get the more I find great joy in the little tiny touches. With the cooler temps, one of my favorite things to do is snuggle with my older son after I put the baby to bed. You know what makes snuggling even better? Hot Chocolate. Hot Chocolate actually makes everything better, come to think of it. But I don't want Colt getting loaded up with artificial (or "Natural" for that matter) flavors, tons of sugar, and toxic ingredients. So, I make Hot Chocolate by heating about a cup and a half of raw milk,  couple teaspoons of raw sugar, and some heaping spoonfuls of Raw Cacao Powder in a saucepan. After it gets pretty warm, I use this handy inexpensive Milk Frother to make it all fluffy and fun. Colt and I have special little mugs just for our Hot Chocolate, and it is just the sweetest time.

Fulfillment:

Nothing fills you up better than a great book. It's good for the mind and good for the soul. There are few books I read more than once.... very few. But this one was so quick and engaging that I literally finished it and started over. Tribe by Sebastian Junger was a great read! "Combining history, psychology, and anthropology, TRIBE explores what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty, belonging, and the eternal human quest for meaning. It explains the irony that-for many veterans as well as civilians-war feels better than peace, adversity can turn out to be a blessing, and disasters are sometimes remembered more fondly than weddings or tropical vacations. TRIBE explains why we are stronger when we come together, and how that can be achieved even in today's divided world."

The Fab Number Five

The question I get more than any other question... "What mascara do you use? It never runs!" You may be shocked to know it is nothing expensive or crazy. I use Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara in the color Blackest Black. I've used it for probably 15 years. I have been tempted to try others but they are always a waste of money with my sweaty lifestyle. My friend and Haka Tribe member, Tracie Carley, delivers a steady stream of them to Haka for me or other members. You can also get it through her website HERE.

And there you have it! Five things that are making life at The Haka House just a little bit more spectacular! Hope you find something in here to Haka-ize your own life :-)
