One Year Anniversary

We did it!!!I can't believe we are through a whole year here at Haka... the time just flies by and POOF! It's gone. After our One Year Anniversary Bash, I slept for 11 hours straight. What?!? It was an amazing celebration and an even more amazing year. Seriously though, the time just travels so very fast and before you know it you are sitting in your rocking chair reflecting on the risks you took and the legacy you left. Contrary to popular belief, I do NOT bounce out of bed ready to seize the world every single day. Just like you, there are days when I struggle, boy do I struggle. The winds buffet against me. They come from every direction, and they seem overpowering. Lately, this has been happening a lot for me, everything feels hard, nothing seems to want to give. I'm sure you know that feeling... When things get strained, I have a couple of strategies I have learned over the years to get me through. Let me share:

1. Remember the Strongest Oak is not the one protected from the elements. In a forest, the little saplings in the middle never reach their full height, their full potential. Sure, they are blocked from the tortuous winds, but they also get blocked from the sun. Things get tough sometimes, tortuous even. BUT, taking a chance and going out into the storm will set you in just the right place when the sun shines down.

2. Use the Slight Edge approach. I've shared this philosophy before and I really believe it. You can very rarely turn things around RIGHT NOW. In stead, you have to get momentum going in the right direction and that requires one step--yep, just one baby step- in the right direction. If you need to head East, you will never ever ever get there unless you move East. Take inventory and make your next decision today in the right direction, then your next, then your next....

3. Know what you know, and more importantly, know what you don't. You don't have to know everything, or do everything right, or be perfect in any way, shape or form. But, if you don't know what you need to work on, then you are wasting every, single second of your life. You'd never ask surgeon to fix your knee if your shoulder was broken, right? The same goes for your spirit, your body, your mind, and your heart. Ask questions, learn from others, evaluate yourself. Chances are very good that if you are struggling right now, you took a role in getting there- And if you think you didn't, then we already know what you need to work on ;-) At Haka, we always say every strength is a weakness and every weakness is a strength. Let that roll around in your brain a bit, then start working on your "punch list for you."

4. When all else fails, do something nice for someone. Nothing makes you feel better than helping someone else. Sometimes, you stepping outside your own little world and reaching out a helping hand is about the only thing you can do to stop the negativity. Hug a cat, walk a dog, volunteer, babysit, buy a little something special for someone, send a card, just do SOMETHING!
